Word Ban

Daily writing prompt
If you could permanently ban a word from general usage, which one would it be? Why?

Honestly, I wouldn’t ban any words.

As an appreciator of language and etymology, I believe words are an important reflection of society as a whole. Whether you agree with a word or not is irrelevant. Simply don’t use it. Words can only affect you if you let them.

That being said, words can have a profound effect, powerful in their own right. Words and language will forever be apart of humans. Thus I feel banning words would ignore their importance, what the reflect of society or what they can teach us.

Historically, people ban things such as books and medias in an attempt to control people, to control how and what they think. However, words aren’t inherently bad. It is the use and connotation that people give that gives words their true power. I firmly believe in the phrase “you can’t have good without the bad, the light without the dark.’

I also firmly believe that having the vocabulary to express yourself, your thoughts and emotions -whether good, bad, or ugly- is not just powerful, it’s liberating.

So no, I wouldn’t ban a single word.
