Lead v. Follow

Daily writing prompt
Are you a leader or a follower?

Another week, another prompt I simply can’t ignore.

I always found this question to be silly, mainly because someone can be both. And also because people seem to have inherently made one better than the other. If you immediately picked one based on the sentence I just wrote, then you understand what I mean.

Without getting too long winded, a rather obvious trait of mine, I think it’s perfectly agreeable that someone can be both a leader or a follower. I, for example, would consider myself a follower. I have always been more introverted and am also the second of two children, so it just feels right to me to let others take the lead. I am more than content to follow what someone else wants to do unless I have strong opinions on the matter. However, I also have no issues taking the lead if that’s what I feel needs done.

Take for example holidays. I wrote a recent entry about holiday plans where I spoke of my mother being the driving force behind them. Since becoming an adult, though, my mom has stepped back. Often I am met with “I don’t know” or “It’s up to you guys and what you want to do” when I ask what the plans are. I learned rather quickly that it’s easier to either just make the plans or suggestions and see how favorably they respond to them. I rarely have strong enough feelings to firmly state what I want; but the only thing that makes me feel worse is indecision. The whole “What do you want to eat?” argument? It haunts my nightmares.

That all being said, due to the country I live in, our society has made being a leader seem better than a follower, which I firmly believe just isn’t true. It takes a lot to be a leader and even more to be a good leader. Not everyone is cut out for it, and that’s perfect. We can’t live in a world with only leaders, just the same as we couldn’t live in a world with only follows. Like yin and yang, everything is about balance. If everyone wanted to lead, we wouldn’t get anywhere.

But I must cut myself off before I get too preachy.
